Perfect length loop for a 2 night trek. If you are arriving late on DAY 1 head out clockwise. It’s a steep but quick climb to John Rob Shelter. Follow then well marked trail to an amazing spring gushing with fresh cold water. There are great views from the shelter and then even more views from the fire tower. The loop finishes with a water fall and short hike along a river valley.
GETTING THERE (Catskill Trails Map Set – map #141)
Drive to the end of Spruce ton Rd and park in one of the two designated parking area.
Going clockwise from the parking area, the trail is a steep steady incline to the shelter and then on to the fire tower. The trail then follows the ridge until it drops down into the valley and follows the river back to the road and parking area.
The overlook in camp is a great place for a cocktail so bring a flask and a cup. Also water abounds from the spring so fill up with the 3L bottle and Bush Pot and boil up lots of water for a pasta dinner and coffee for breakfast.
