Adirondacks: Big Rock Pond

WHERE: CENTRAL ADIRONDACKS

NEAREST TOWN: TUPPER LAKE, NY

ACTIVITIES
Canoe, Swim, Day Hike

WHY GO
Perfect serenity canoeing into a largely uninhabited, vast landscape. You might find some other campers but likely not. Spend as much time as you can watching the water go from absolute stillness to lively in a storm. Lots of wildlife if you keep your eyes peeled.

GETTING THERE
5-6 hrs drive north from NYC. We like Raquette River Outfitters for the boats, they can drop them for you at the Tupper Lake Public launch.

Paddle through a small creek at the back end of Tupper, and after a bit and a short portage you’ll be in Big Rock Pond. Multiple campsites around the banks. Find one with a ledge for jumping!

GEAR TIPS
Pass time with an Edward Abbey book and your Hip Flask. Nights can be chilly so bring your woolies and a hat.
